SitN Session #12: Into Rivenroar

Warning: Spoilers below for the adventure, Rescue at Rivenroar (albeit a modified version).

Starting with this session, I’m simply posting the Campaign Journal entries written by the players. Typically, I ask the players to take turns each week writing a journal entry and posting it on our group’s private website. We hadn’t been doing this up until this point. Fair warning…the quality, creativity, and completeness of the entries varies from week to week. I’ll post some notes in italics.

This entry is from Deornoth’s perspective.

We were at the bottom of the stairs, at the entrance to the Rivenroar catacombs. Upon opening the doors, we were greeted by four hobs and two gobs. We fought and killed the hobs. The gobs fled through a door to the west. We take a short rest.

The chamber had three sets of doors, besides the ones we entered through. Each set of doors was identified by a plaque. The north doors: Rivenroar Family, the east doors: Jallach Family, the west doors: Urstadt Family.

A set of two braziers, that burned with black flames, were, also, in the chamber. It seemed to me that they were used to keep people from entering the Rivenroar crypt. They moved to and from the doors, as well as shooting the black flames between each other. Roxy attempted to discern their use and how we might disable them, but she did not succeed. No sign of the people taken from Everlund.

We went through the open doors, to the west, the way the gobs had fled. Just beyond the doors to the next chamber, was an over-turned table. Rawr and Tyronde charged the table to move it out of the way. This chamber had bedrolls scattered about, sacks lining on wall, a mundane brazier and one hobgoblin. The hobgoblin was easily dispatched, but not before he was able to yell at the top of his lungs. We started looking around, there were doors to the north and to the west. A few moments later, we heard (and felt) an animalistic roar. Both sets of doors opened, revealing more hobs and gobs. Again, a battle ensued. As we were engaged by hobs and gobs, a large drake entered the fray from the way we had come. The battle was hard fought, some companions went down, then brought back by yours truly. At some point, another drake with a goblin seated a upon it, answering the the death rattle of the first, joined the battle. As I said, a hard fought battle, but we overcame. After a short rest or two, we continued on.

The doors to the north opened to a hallway with a couple of pits. The bottom of the first pit looked like it may have opened up into a larger cavern. The doors to the west led us to a lit room. This room had openings to the east and west, to the north was the image of a castle in a swamp. The image looked as though it had been painted on a sheet of water. The light was coming from the image. Yuri moved next to it to look behind it. It was not hanging from the wall and he could not see through it. As some of the party was busy examining the image, some spirits moved out from within the walls. Yet again, we were fighting for our lives, or at least Roxy was. The spirits seemed to focus on the party members that wielded Radiance as a weapon. We triumphed over the undead, but we were wearing down. We needed to continue on to find the people that were abducted.

The next room had niches lining the walls. Roxy detected a magical belt on one of the corpses. The set of doors flew open, Roxy’s magical light went out, and we could hear whooshing sounds above our heads. Oh and the temperature dropped.
