Zahndethus

Background
Zahndethus grew up in a mid-size farming community called Farview, so named because of the nearby cliffs that give a spectacular view of the countryside beyond. Although he was the son of the local noble, he preferred to spend most of his time with the other children his age, learning to track and hunt in the nearby forest.

Life was good, but when Zahndethus was seventeen years old, something changed in the land. The sun struggled to give off more light than a full moon, and much of the local wildlife seemed to have vanished. Villagers began reporting seeing strange creatures in the shadows. A close encounter soon revealed these to be werewolves.

Some villages muttered that the land was cursed, that the town had brought it upon itself. Some especially blamed Zahndethus’s father, saying that he had led them to this. Most people did not believe that, however.

The werewolves began attacking the outlying farms, killing livestock and sometimes people. Many people abandoned their farms, saying to was too dangerous to stay, and the crops were doing poorly under the pale sun anyway. They fled to the nearest city, Tarnfall, where the curse did not hold, a few days travel away. There were people who stayed, though. Those whose family had held their land for generations and were unwilling to give it up, those who felt they had a duty to protect the land, and those who had nowhere to go or could not travel. Zahndethus’s family stayed, of course, to give the others hope.

About a year passed, and the curse remained. The tougher townsfolk hunted werewolves, killing them as they could. As time went on, they noticed something different about some of them. Some of the werewolves seemed more intelligent, not just feral beasts like most of them. They could strategize, lay traps, and even speak! They did not speak often, where the townsfolk could hear, at least, but from what they heard, these werewolves called themselves the Order of the Fang.

The werewolves had never entered the town proper until then, but on the night of Zahndethus’s eighteenth birthday, a sizable number of them attacked his house. Seeing as how it was his eighteenth birthday, Zahndethus was rather inebriated, and could do nothing to aid his family. His father, mother, and sister, none of whom could fight, were all killed. It seemed to Zahndethus that they were looking for something. As the werewolves were searching, a lamp was knocked over, setting the house aflame. Zahndethus fled, running into the forest, howls behind him. He never looked back. There was nothing left for him in Farview..

Eventually, he arrived in the port town of Windywater. There, he worked odd jobs to make a living, eventually getting enough to afford basic training in the arcane arts. Once he received what training he could there, he set off on a boat to Freeport. He wants nothing more than to become strong enough to go back to his home and save it from the its fate.

Appearance
Zahndethus is of an average hight, with short, dark hair that is almost black in color. He has a lanky build, and wears a dark green wizard’s robe, with a hood he can pull up if he needs to conceal his face.

Personality
Zahndethus is a determined man, although often cheerful as well. Due to the circumstances of his family’s death, he will not drink to excess, and cannot abide others who do.

Secrets, goals, and plans
Zahndethus wants nothing more than to gain enough arcane power to somehow stop the curse that has fallen over his home.. Freeport seems like the best place to go for further training, and perhaps he can learn something of the curse as well. If he hears even a whisper of creatures such as werewolves somewhere, he will want to investigate.
